Be The Change

Feel like the world is going crazy right now? You aren’t entirely wrong.  There is major shift happening right now and natural and human made disasters are part of it.  How to come through the pain and suffering you see around you and on the news?

Years ago at Earthdance NorCal I attended an Elders’ Council. It was around the time the world was expected to end according to a Long Count Mayan Calendar.

A Mayan Shaman shared this: “you all have it confused.” The world itself isn’t ending -- it’s the world as you know it. The Earth, along with the rest of our galaxy, is traveling through different energetic spaces in the Universe, these spaces vibrate differently, and we’re coming to a space that isn’t in harmony with Earth. That will cause disruption in the form of cataclysmic weather events (yup, for real he said that years ago) and fear from people who don’t understand this shift and who live in anger and scarcity.

Humanity will be presented with an opportunity to either disintegrate into war over resources because we are stuck in fear, or to come closer together by demonstrating love and compassion and helping each other.  Not just with kind words and thoughts (which do matter), but in action. You are either part of the revival or part of the disintegration.  There is no waiting for others to take care of our world, it’s up to us everyday to tip the balance to Love through our words and actions.

Whatever your beliefs about the Universe, it’s clear that this Wise Man was telling us to Be The Change.

The past few weeks I’ve especially taken this to heart and accepted invitations to be part of this change.  I’m sharing a few of the organizations I’m honored to support, some for years, others more recently.

Knowing that I’m giving time and resources to others keeps me going when it seems that things are falling apart.

Please consider how you can support these or other organizations uplifting our communities financially or with your time; even sharing fundraisers and signing petitions is helpful!

Tell us what you’re doing in the ShowGirl Temple Facebook Group or comments. We don’t always share our good works because we want to focus on the beneficiaries or know that as a global citizen this is what you do, but our experience inspires others to action and deserves appreciation too!

Bling & Blessings, Eva D’Luscious

Hurricane Maria Caribbean Relief Fund – Weeks after Hurricane Maria massive support is still needed in Puerto Rico, Dominica and the Virgin Islands.

Raphael House – Pin-Ups for Charity has created a deck of 13 lovely ladies to support Raphael House in their mission to end intimate partner violence.  Pre-order yours here and look for me on the Number 5 Cards!

Northern California Fire Storm – Just over two years ago we moved from the area that has been very hard hit by the fires, my cousin and her family are still evacuated from their home.  Chimera Arts has created this site to gather updates, donation locations and resource requests.

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – My production company, Cabaret de Caliente, has been raising funds for the Russian River branch of this global organization for several years.  SPI is devoted to community service, ministry and outreach to groups pushed to the fringes of society.  Last year I was named St. Bublicious for these efforts and plan to be more active with my local Portland, OR, Chapter.

American Civil Liberties Organization – Dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of civil liberties and civil rights.  Now more than ever!

Amnesty International – Working worldwide to tackle the most pressing human rights violations, including in the US.

Sometimes the answer is to say "forget you To-Do List!" and have fun with loved ones.  Fun isn't frivolous, or a time waster -- it is how you recharge your batteries for all the important work you do, how you keep yourself and your community going in challenging times.

Smoothie Time -- Eva's Favorite

Eva's Favorite Smoothie Recipe

I'm a better cook than baker, so my recipes rely on the "that looks about right" method; adjust as needed for your taste!  This makes about a 20oz smoothie.

  • Cover bottom of blender with a thick layer of frozen Organic Antioxidant Berries Mix (Costco)
  • Cover that with plain yogurt (I usually use goat yogurt from Trader Joe's)
  • Cover that with a thin layer of protein powder (chocolate is my favorite, but today I only had vanilla)
  • Pour in enough cranberry juice to cover all of the ingredients
  • Blend until satisfied

When I really need to keep going I add cacao nibs to the mix or sprinkle them on top, but they don't go through straws very well.  Enjoy!!!

That Time I Thought I Needed Approval From Others Or Why Comparison Really is The Thief of Joy

OK, if I’m being truly honest, it was a lot more than once, it may even happen again.  I suppose it’s part of being human.  It starts out with wanting approval from our parents, sometimes for love or sometimes just so we can have those jeans, sleepover, allowance money, car, etc.  And then at some point we start wanting approval from others to go places in life and when we see others doing amazing things we feel bad about ourselves for not being there.

I know more experienced people can break this down better than me if you want all the “Whys”, so I’ll just share how it manifested for me and how I got over it, in case there’s a nugget of wisdom you can grab onto and climb out of that joy-sucking hole, because it’s not doing anything for anyone, especially you.

After a few years I got to a point in Burlesque where I felt ready for the next big step.  For me this looked like people requesting me to perform in shows that actually paid my bills, coming to me for guidance on acts and shows, you know making an actual living through the sparkles!

I thought I saw other people doing it, featuring in festivals, being paid for travel, I mean I even paid them well to appear in my shows!  How did these people seem to make it happen “overnight” while I had been working for years.  Who did I need to impress?

And then it hit me -- No one, NO ONE, just happens. We may not see the years of work they put in before they come to our awareness, or someone may spend years developing skills in one area and then turn them quickly to success in another realm, but all of it takes work and training. To suppose this is both an insult to their efforts and a delusion to our selves.

But enough about them, let's get back to me, because really I'm the one who needs to be responsible for me.  And that is exactly where my turning point came. I realized I was wasting time watching these people and being down on myself. That was time I could spend learning and training!

It's one thing to look to others who are doing amazing things for inspiration and encouragement, and that's the best place to leave it. Once you have your spark, you need to keep nourishing it, you are the keeper of your own dreams and ultimately responsible for making them happen.

Comparing yourself to others and waiting for their approval puts you in a place of disparity that tells you "I'm not good/strong/sexy/smart/insert anything here enough", which leads to a dark hole of feeling sad for yourself and potentially taking other down with you. And there's one thing no one has time for -- THAT.  Whatever you believe or know about your purpose on this Earth, it isn't to be a sucking black hole.

The Universe Wants You to Succeed. It's up to you to determine what success looks like (big hint, don't ask major consumer companies), and it's up to you to make it happen.  It was time to get to work building my skills so I have more to offer, and that's how I'm going to make it big!

How can I be so sure the Universe is rooting for you? Because I am and so are other people who care about you! We're here to help lift each other up, to comfort each other through struggles, scream for each other's triumphs and laugh along the way. The very fact of our mutual existence proves this to me.

And if you think about what it means to admire another persons' accomplishments, you know this too. You are cheering and appreciating them for stepping fully into their Fabulous, and for sharing it with you. And there are people ready for you to shine your light too!

So what's holding you back from stepping into your Fabulous? Really, if there's something I want to know about it.  I won't promise a fix, but I promise to listen and do my best to support you stepping into a more Fabulous space!

Bling & Blessings, Eva

One of the hardest concepts to teach Burlesque and fitness students is the power of rest.  When you’re onstage to perform or in a studio to get fit, it often feels like you must constantly be moving and doing, constantly demonstrating your Fabulous.  But as in life, taking a moment to pause, be still and let the audience or your body process what has been happening is incredibly powerful, and incredibly important.

I’ve been a work hard, play hard person most of my life – the result being occasional burn out and forced rest when my body got sick or just too tired to do anything.  The wisdom of aging, and learning from more experienced sources has introduced me to the concept of REST HARD.  As in take breaks that are just as big and intense as your work and play so your body and mind can absorb and process all that you’ve been doing.  After all, if you don’t stop for a moment here and there to absorb and acknowledge your Fabulous, how can anyone else?

The Gospel of Glitter

I am the High Priestess of Tease, spreading the Gospel of Glitter far and wide.  Sound silly or a bit “out there”?  I assure you, much thought has gone into my Gospel of Glitter and it’s something I’m very passionate about.

My Gospel of Glitter is creating a safe, welcoming space for people of all body shapes, sizes and genders to celebrate their creativity and sexuality. We’ve been taught for a long time that sexuality is a bad thing, and yet we humans cannot exist without sex.  Sexual energy is powerful, it is the creative force life requires and this causes fear in those who are unbalanced in their energies and feeling out of control, consciously or unconsciously.

I believe that sexuality is normal, healthy, something to treat with respect and to celebrate.  Constant shaming around sexuality makes talking about a very normal and natural aspect of our lives taboo, the end result being institutionalized sexual aggression and harassment.  For me Burlesque is a playful way to engage with sexuality and invite others into the conversation.

Modern Burlesque takes many forms, and not all shows are a safe haven, but the majority of places I’ve performed support the power of my sexuality to enchant, excite and crack people up.  I reach them with an important message of self-love and acceptance through the veil of entertainment.  I’m happiest when female audience members tell me that my shining on stage makes them feel more comfortable with their own sexuality, and I know I’m sending a little Glitter home with them.

I feel so blessed to receive this knowledge! The only better thing I can do is provide a safe space for others to learn the same.  Some of my students have become professional performers, some did one performance, some never got on stage, but all of them received loving support for embodying powerful energy.  I see them strut out the studio door, more confident in their bodies and their selves and I know the Glitter will sprinkle off them too.

I created BurlyQFit to share the Gospel of Glitter even further.  BurlyQFit is based in fitness for those who might not be comfortable taking a class in-person, who like the sassy attitude but can’t imagine doing a striptease -- even at home alone! Doing the movements and playing with this energy in your safe space feels good and will certainly bring Glitter to your life, and once you feel it I know you’ll pass the sparkle on.

I hope you'll join me online or in the studio soon!  Bling & Blessings, Eva
