The historic definition of Burlesque is "a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects." It has been around for hundreds of years. In contemporary performance Burlesque often includes striptease and dance, and can range from sexy to satire to statement, or an incredible combination of all of these. Most modern Burlesque shares an attitude of body positivity and acceptance and puts the performer in control of how they are portrayed on stage. I think of Burlesque as a mutual flirtation with the audience, where you strive to stun them, but leave them wanting more.
